Aoki vs. Nagashima: Getting Special Rules WrongAuthor : Jack Barrington
1306152886

We all got another disheartening insight into the current state of Japanese MMA recently, when FEG announced that Shinya Aoki would face K-1 kickboxer Yuichiro "Jienotsu" Nagashima in a special rules bout at the year end Dynamite!! 2010 show. As much as I want to be positive about Japanese MMA, this fight in particular betrays not only FEG’s desperation but also a complete lack of any real imagination in how to best use one of Japan’s marquee stars.

Josh Koscheck: The People's InstigatorAuthor : Jack Barrington

Judging by recent fan opinion, the upcoming matchup between Georges St-Pierre and Josh Koscheck has turned into a pantomime-like tussle between good and evil. St-Pierre, the people’s champion, ready to fare down his brash opponent, beat him where he is best and send the ugly sister Koscheck back to the base of the contendership pile. People are positive that St-Pierre will win this, confident that their champion will retain his title in definitive fashion, confident that the increasingly annoying and unpopular Koscheck won’t get his hands anywhere near the gold. This confidence in St-Pierre and hatred of Koscheck puts me firmly in the challenger’s camp.

Going the Distance: An Examination of Finishing Rates in the UFCAuthor : Brad Taschuk
1306152742

Mixed Martial Arts has always been celebrated for its diversity. It is the product of taking a plethora of distinct disciplines of combat, throwing them all together, and seeing what emerges. As a result, there are more ways to win an MMA bout than choices at an Old Country Buffet. Fans laud the fact that a fight can be won strictly on the feet or ground – or through some combination of the two – and with so many avenues to approaching a fight, finishing an opponent has always been the expected outcome. However, in recent years it seems the finishes are occurring less and less, and the ire of fans at decisions is increasing exponentially. Why? Why are fights being finished less often and why are fans so livid about it?
